NPU vs GPU

NPUs and GPUs can both accelerate artificial intelligence workloads, but they are designed for different purposes.

GPU

A GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) was originally designed for graphics processing.

Its highly parallel architecture also makes it useful for AI training and inference.

GPUs are widely used in data centers, workstations, gaming PCs, and AI servers.

NPU

An NPU (Neural Processing Unit) is designed specifically for neural network and AI workloads.

NPUs are increasingly integrated into smartphones, PCs, and other devices for efficient on-device AI processing.

Key difference

In simple terms:

GPU: powerful parallel computing processor.

NPU: specialized AI accelerator designed for neural network workloads.

The actual performance and efficiency depend on the hardware, model, software framework, precision, and workload.
